Former Pakistan cricketer and renowned commentator Waqar Younis has offered his insights into Pakistan’s prospective squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA) from June 1. With his vast experience and deep understanding of the game, Younis shared his vision for Pakistan’s lineup, highlighting key players and strategic choices crucial for Pakistan’s bid to secure the coveted T20 World Cup title.
Top-Order Firepower and Middle-Order Assurance
Younis emphasized the importance of a strong top-order, comprising Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman, and Usman Khan, alongside skipper Babar Azam. This formidable trio aims to bolster Pakistan’s batting lineup and provide solidity at the start of the innings. Despite Azam Khan’s absence from the ongoing series due to injury, Younis expressed confidence in his potential return to form and included him in the middle order, emphasizing his match-winning abilities.
“This is what I feel, if they are all fit, I think this is my squad with Babar Azam, Saim Ayub, and Fakhar Zaman, three openers. Then you got [Mohammad] Rizwan, Usman Khan, I think he needs to go to the World Cup. And then, of course, you have Azam Khan, if you’re going to have two wicketkeepers then he should be in the side as he is another match-winner,” said Younis, as quoted by Geo Super.
Spin-Oriented Approach in All-Rounders
When it came to the all-rounders, Younis favored a spin-oriented strategy, selecting Shadab Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, and Imad Wasim. This approach underscores Pakistan’s reliance on versatility and spin options in the squad. Younis further strengthened the spin arsenal by including wrist spinners Abrar Ahmed and Usama Mir in his envisioned squad.
“Iftikhar [Ahmed], Shadab [Khan] definitely comes in the side automatically, Imad Wasim and Abrar [Ahmed], I feel that you’d be needing a mystery spinner, that is why I have gone with him, then Usama Mir, I think Pakistan might need another spinner there in the West Indies and United States,” explained Younis.
Emphasis on Pace Prowess
In the pace department, Younis highlighted Shaheen Afridi as the spearhead of the attack, supported by the experienced Naseem Shah, Mohammad Amir, and a recovering Haris Rauf. This selection strategy reflects Younis’s preference for seasoned campaigners and proven talent over emerging prospects like Abbas Afridi and Zaman Khan, who are currently part of the team facing New Zealand but did not make it into Younis’s projected squad for the T20 World Cup.
“And then the four pacers, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Amir, and Haris Rauf, if he is fit,” concluded Waqar Younis.
Strategic Insights for Pakistan’s Campaign
Waqar Younis’s squad selections provide valuable insights into Pakistan’s strategic approach for the T20 World Cup 2024. The inclusion of seasoned players, along with a strong emphasis on spin options, underscores Pakistan’s intent to adapt to the conditions in the West Indies and USA.
As the deadline for the official squad announcement approaches on May 1, Pakistan’s selectors will likely consider Younis’s recommendations while finalizing the squad. The T20 World Cup promises to be an exciting opportunity for Pakistan to showcase their talent and compete for cricket’s ultimate prize under the leadership and guidance of Babar Azam and the coaching staff.
